PI Brijuni National Park
The Brijuni National Park Public Institution manages the Brijuni National Park, proclaimed on 1 November 1983, which is also a memorial area. Located in the northern Adriatic in the Istrian County, the park encompasses 14 islands, islets and rocks along the western coast of Istria, not far from Pula, covering 3,395 hectares, of which almost 80% is sea. It was established by the Government of the Republic of Croatia, and the area is uninhabited and 100% owned by the Republic of Croatia. Part of the island is used for the residential needs of the President and the Government of the Republic of Croatia, while part is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense (Honorary Battalion and the Croatian Navy).
Management and conservation of nature
The public institution manages the Brijuni National Park in a way that balances the goals of preserving natural and cultural values with the needs of tourism and other stakeholders. According to the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the park falls into Category II of protected areas, focused on the protection of ecosystems with sustainable use. The park conducts long-term monitoring of conditions, such as sea temperature, which contributes to understanding changes at the regional level. The institution also establishes long-term cooperation with research institutions to improve the scientific basis for nature conservation.
The institution manages parts of the Natura 2000 ecological network, including:
1. Conservation area significant for species and habitat types (POVS, HR2000604 Brijuni National Park) with targeted habitat types:
- 8330: Flooded or partially flooded sea caves
- 1170: Reefs
- 1120*: Settlements of posidonia (Posidonion oceanicae)
- 1240: Rocks and cliffs of the Mediterranean coast overgrown with endemic Limonium spp.
2. Conservation area important for birds (POP, HR1000032 Water of Western Istria) within the borders of the national park for the following species:
- Black-throated raptor (Gavia arctica)
- Red-throated raptor (Gavia stellata)
- Sea crow (Gulosus aristotelis desmarestii)
- Red-billed tern (Sterna hirundo)
- Long-billed tern (Sterna sandvicensis)
- Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis)
The institution employs around 330 staff, of which professional service staff and nature guards are focused on preserving and monitoring the state of nature and implementing conservation measures. The activity is financed primarily from tourism revenues and EU projects.
International cooperation and projects
The Brijuni National Park Public Institution actively participates in international projects aimed at nature protection. Brijuni is one of the initiators of the Croatian Network of Marine Protected Areas, established through the Interreg Med project MPA NETWORKS, which was led by MedPAN, the Mediterranean Network of Marine Protected Area Managers from 2019 to 2022. It is through MedPAN that the institution strives to contribute to regional initiatives for marine conservation, and through HRMZP to national ones.
Education and public awareness
The institution pays significant attention to educating and raising awareness among visitors and the general public about the importance of nature and environmental protection. Through programs, workshops and activities, it promotes awareness of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, encouraging public involvement in nature and environmental protection.
