PI Lokrum Reserve

The Lokrum Reserve Public Institution manages the special forest vegetation reserve "Otok Lokrum" - the third oldest protected nature area in Croatia (since 1948). Lokrum is located directly in front of the old city center of Dubrovnik and covers 72 hectares of land and a 150-meter wide strip of the surrounding sea. Almost 90% of the area is covered by forest vegetation, and in a small area all developmental sequences of Eumediterranean plant communities are present, which makes it extremely valuable from a botanical and landscape perspective.

The entire Lokrum area is part of the European ecological network Natura 2000 (HR4000017) due to the presence of eight significant habitat types, including Posidonia meadows, Eumediterranean grasslands and Mediterranean forests. Lokrum is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as an integral part of the protected historical complex of the city of Dubrovnik, and is protected as a cultural property of the Republic of Croatia.
