As part of the Croatian Network of Marine Protected Areas, we invite you to join our online lecture about:
Potential and Prospects for the Restoration of the European Flat Oyster in the Adriatic Sea
Date: March 10, 2026
Time: 10:00 – 11:30 AM
The lecture will be delivered by dr. sc. Daria Ezgeta Balić, Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (Laboratory for Fisheries Biology). Her scientific work primarily focuses on the biology and ecology of bivalves, and in recent years she has been particularly dedicated to researching the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis). She is the manager of the Croatian Science Foundation project “Potential and Prospects for the Restoration of the European Flat Oyster in the Adriatic Sea (POPOyster).” In addition to her scientific research, she is highly active in science popularization and coordinates several projects at the Institute aimed at bringing science closer to the wider public.
The lecture will focus on the potential for restoring the European flat oyster in the Adriatic Sea. Participants will be introduced to:
• the results collected so far and key findings achieved within the POPOyster project
• examples of good practice from other countries that can serve as models for restoring populations in the Adriatic
• a newly developed citizen science platform intended for reporting findings and field observations of the European flat oyster in the Adriatic Sea
