As part of the Croatian Network of Marine Protected Areas, an online lecture will be held on the topic:
Restoration of Degraded Marine Habitats: Practices, Challenges and Perspectives
Date: 17th of February 2026
Time: 10:00 – 11:30
The lecture will be held by dr. sc. Silvija Kipson, marine biologist and scientific diver, who currently works as an independent researcher and consultant through her scientific and professional services practice – SEAFAN. Over more than 20 years dedicated to the study of marine species and habitats, Silvija has also been involved in developing and testing methods for the restoration of degraded marine habitats within the Horizon 2020 MERCES project.
Biodiversity, as well as human well-being, is threatened by the dramatic loss of ecosystems and the vital services they provide. In light of the Nature Restoration Regulation and at the midpoint of the UN Decades dedicated to Ecosystem Restoration and Ocean Science, in her lecture Silvija will:
- explain the need for active restoration of degraded marine habitats in the Anthropocene;
- clarify the concepts of passive vs. active restoration of degraded marine habitats;
- provide a brief overview of existing approaches and practices, with a focus on Mediterranean habitats;
- comment on the most common reasons for the success or failure of marine habitat restoration initiatives;
- highlight opportunities for progress – opportunities that should not be missed.
